Apply to the program through CU Abroad but DO NOT apply online. Use the application form found here and the course proposal form found here.
Turn your application into CU Abroad and email Prof. Cowen when you have done so.
Cantabria Application - deadline April 1, 2009 for summer 2009 departure
You will separately need to apply to U. Cantabria as a visiting student. The application procedure can be found here.
On the online application procedure you will see that you need to submit several items in hard copy by mail to U. Cantabria. In particular you will need an "Exchange Student Certificate". This will be a letter nominating you to the exchange program issued by CU Abroad. You should be able to collect this letter from Prof. Cowen after Tuesday March 11, 2008. One of the items you will be asked to send in is a signed "slip". The intention is for you to print a copy of the final application as shown at the end and simply sign that so MAKE SURE YOU SAVE AND PRINT THIS DOCUMENT.
Note - you can only fill out the online application if you have a valid passport. If you do not have a valid passport contact Prof. Cowen for a form and mail it in with the other requested material to start the process of getting a letter of acceptance for the visa. You will need to send in a copy of your passport when you get it.
Before clicking on the online application you will need to disable any "pop-up" blockers you have running.
When filling out the online application:
1) Under Programme select USA
2) Under Degree Currently Studying enter Batchelor of Science
3) Under Num. of months enter the number of months based on your dates. For date of arrival enter 07/30/09 if you think you might take the August summer session course and 08/31/09 if you know you will only be taking the September summer session course. For date of departure I suggest 8/31/2010 if you think you might want to stay for an internship (if we can work out the hiring/visa issues). If you know you will not be staying for an internship you can put 7/31/2010. Note the first day of classes at Cornell for fall of 2009 is Aug 28, 2009. Keep in mind that if you are not entirely sure you want to keep your options open and use early and late dates so that the letter of invitation shows these dates for your visa. You do not need to enter Spain on the date your visa is first valid but you can not enter before it is valid and you must leave while it is valid.
4) Under HOME UNIVERSITY INSTITUTIONAL COORDINATOR enter: Okihiro, Elizabeth, Student Services Coordinator, Cornell Abroad; USA; Ithaca; 300 Caldwell Hall; 14853; phone: 1-(607) 255-1324; fax 1-(607) 255-8700; ero2@cornell.edu
5) Under HOME UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTAL COORDINATOR enter: Cowen, Edwin, Associate Professor; USA; Ithaca; 220 Hollister Hall, CEE; 14853-3501; phone: 1-(607) 255-5140; fax 1-(607) 255-9004; eac20@cornell.edu
6) If you have/will have completed SpanR 123 select Intermediate if you have/will have completed SpanR 219 select or above click Advanced. For summer language courses your level will be assessed so this is not terribly important.
7) Fill out the table as follows:
| ¿Quiere que le reservemos alojamiento / Do you wish us to book accommodation? | Si / Yes No |
| ¿Desea participar en el Programa de Orientacion? / Do you
wish to take part in our Orientation Programme?
This is up to you - you will have been in Santander for the language course and this orientation is geared toward new students to the area. You will have an orientation specific to the Intercambio program but this might be a way to meet other new students to the University |
Si / Yes No |

Summer Spanish Language courses offered in Spain prior to start of Academic Year
Spanish language courses will be available in August and again in September prior to the start of the academic year. For summer 2009 the dates are Aug 1 - Aug. 29 and Sept 3 - Sept 18. The latter set is an intensive set designed for students from abroad studying at Cantabria for the coming semester and all Cornell students (unless exempted due to proficiency) will take this course. Students wishing more in depth Spanish preparation should consider taking the August course in addition to the September course. During this(ese) courses students will be housed by families screened by the Language Center (Centro de Idiomas de la Universidad de Cantabria) at a 2007 year cost of 24 euro/day. This includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some additional information on these courses can be found at: www.unican.es/ciuc/index.htm

Student visa for Spain
Don't underestimate this process. Make sure your documents are in order and things should go smoothly. Here is a personal experience of the process from a student at Radford which is a lot like my own experience. Keep in mind that the details of the process are always changing. It would be very wise to start watching the rules around Feb. 1 as anything newly enacted for 2009 should be on-line by then but there is no guarantee.

The Consulate General of Spain in New York handles applications from residents of New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey. I believe since you are full time students at Cornell you all have the option of applying in New York (you will almost certainly need to apply in person).
