Wavemaker Standard Operating Procedure

Fill the wave tank before running the wavemaker.  (Wave tank has to be filled to at least 0.5 inch.)

Open the water valve (right behind the motor) for cooling the motor. The handle in vertical direction means off.

Using Computer Generated Waveforms

  1. Unplug the 9-pin connector from PROGRAM on the back of the control panel, if it is connected.

  2. Plug in the BNC connector to PROGRAM on the front panel, if it is not connected.

  3. Verify that the other end of the BNC cable is connected to port zero of the 6-port Analog Out box.

  4. Turn the SPAN to zero.  SET POINT = 5.

  5. Turn on the power for the motor (the gray box in front of wave board).

  6. Turn on the switch of the wavemaker control panel (left lower corner).

  7. Push LOW to start the low-pressure motor. If the wave board is against the stops (from the hydrostatic force of the water) you may need to hold in the reset button while you press the LOW button. This overrides the limit switch shutoff.

  8. Push HIGH to start the high-pressure motor.

  9. Start the Signal Driver software and setup channel zero for the wavemaker. More information on the software is available at http://ceeserver.cee.cornell.edu/mw24/Software/signal_driver.htm

  10. Set the SPAN at the wavemaker to 10 and use the signal driver software to set the desired paddle displacment. A 10 V peak to peak driving signal will generate a peak to peak stroke of 10 inches (25.4 cm)

Using the Internal Function Generator

  1. Unplug the connector from PROGRAM on the front panel, if it is connected.

  2. Plug in the 9-pin connector to PROGRAM on the back of the control panel.

  3. Turn on the power for the motor (the gray box in front of wave board).

  4. Turn on the switch of the wavemaker control panel (left lower corner).

  5. Push LOW to start the low-pressure motor. If the wave board is against the stops (from the hydrostatic force of the water) you may need to hold in the reset button while you press the LOW button. This overrides the limit switch shutoff.

  6. Push HIGH to start the high-pressure motor.

  7. Make sure the WAVEFORM is set at sine function.

  8. Check SPAN and FREQUENCY before starting generating waves.

  9. Push RUN to generate waves and STOP to stop moving wave board.

To turn off the wavemaker:

  1. Push LOW to switch to the low-pressure motor.

  2. Push HYD OFF to turn off the motor.

  3. Turn off the switch on the control panel.

  4. Turn off the power to the motor.

  5. Walt for at least one hour after the motor is shut down before closing the valve for cooling the motor.

About the Wavemaker

The span is the multiplier. If it is set to zero the waveboard will not move off of the position determined by SETPOINT. SETPOINT determines the center position of the waveboard.
