Workshop Announcement A tsunami workshop has been initiated by Professor Philip L.-F. Liu to review the on-going tsunami research in the South China Sea Region and discuss the future actions for tsunami early warning and mitigation in this region. Peru Earthquake On August 15, 2007, a strong earthquake, Mw=8.0 according to Harvard CMT solution, hit the coast of central Peru, causing death of about 500 people. The earthquake-generated tsunami was recorded throughout the Pacific region, with tsunami heights ranging from several to tens of centimeters. No severe damages were reported related to this tsunami event. A preliminary numerical study can be found at [download PDF report].

On December 26,
2004, a giant submarine earthquake triggered the most devastating
tsunami in the history in the Indian Ocean. Almost 300,000 people
were killed and millions were left homeless.
Shortly after the disaster, Philip L.-F. Liu led a delegation of American scientists from the National Science Foundation's Tsunami Research Group and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) into the tsunami-ravaged areas of Sri Lanka, Jan. 9-16, 2005.
